World Music Matters
World Music Matters is a three year project running from 2006 to 2009, funded through the Department for International Development’s Development Awareness Fund. The fund is open to organisations who share DfID’s commitment to raising awareness and understanding of development issues.
Building on Music for Change’s 10 years experience of using the arts in education in order to raise cultural awareness and respect for the wealth of diversity in the UK and around the world, this project provides the opportunity for Music for Change to extend its work to raising awareness of development issues, the global context and impacts of poverty, and the role individuals can play in working towards poverty reduction.
A main project focus is the professional training and development of performing artists to enable them to facilitate effective learning about global issues through arts residencies and workshops in schools.
Year 1 activities included the development of a pilot training programme for artists, followed by the trialling of residencies in local schools.
In year 2 we are focusing on further development and roll-out of the artists’ programme and extending the reach to other schools in the South East.
