The day's events started with the uplifting and dynamic rhythms of the Whitstable Community Samba Band, Samba Pelo Mar; Music for Change staff were shaking their collection tins to the beats! "The sounds were great, I could hear them [Samba Pelo Mar] from way down the beach and it was pulling me in... away from the wind chill" - Mike Nee.
This was later followed, in warmer surroundings, by Music for Change artist Kenny Mangena who led an energetic Gum Boot dance and singing workshop at the Duke of Cumberland pub - children and adults alike were slapping their boots and stamping their feet.
In the evening DJ-ing from Another Planet was provided by Tom Andrews and Steve Matthews and High Life music by Douglas Noble. A cappella group U'Zambezi, had everyone up and dancing to Zimbabwean music, whilst Bosnian singer Téa Hodzic mesmerized the audience with her evocative voice. Folk band, Relig Oran, performed a great set of upbeat and world folk music with a heady mix of flavours and rhythms from traditional music of Europe mixed with exotic sounds of the African Kalimba. The day was a great success and raised £489.88 for the DEC Haiti Earthquake Appeal.
We would like to thank: the Duke of Cumberland pub, Samba Pelo Mar, Lucky Moyo, U'Zambezi, Téa Hodzic, Relig Oran, Another Planet djs and Douglas Noble for kindly offering their time and support for this worthy cause.
We would also like to thank everyone who came along to support and donate to this cause.
